Reconnect With Your Purpose
Suffering is inevitable when you pursue a life or chase a dream that doesn’t belong to you.
In our culture of “American idol” we’re fixated on pursuing dreams that are not ours to begin with. We try to become like the people we think are “successful”. As a result, we contort ourselves into boxes we were never meant to fit.
We blindly follow the advice of parents, social media influencers, pop culture or “online coaches” without stopping to question if what they’re selling is something we even want for our own lives.
When we don’t pause to question and ask, “is this true for me?” you wind up idolizing hustle culture. In turn, we waste time pursuing goals that have little or no meaning to you other than it’s what you feel you “should” do.
We do things like:
- Chase big titles for companies that you don’t care about.
- Stay in jobs that suck your joy and creativity.
- Accept mistreatment and fake a smile.
How can you know if you’re walking someone else’s path?
7 Signs You’re Disconnected From Your Purpose
1. There is an internal unease
2. Doing what you “need/should” do is costing you your mental health
3. You’re confused on a deep level
4. You’re drained energetically
5. You feel like you’re losing yourself
6. You have a “fake it” til you make it mentality
7. You lie about how happy you are to yourself and others
All of these signs are indicators that you have taken a detour on your life path and it’s time to get back on track. If you recognize even one of these feelings, it may be time to re-evaluate who’s path you’re truly on. Have you fallen asleep at the wheel? Are you just following the person in front of you? Or are you living a life of intention and purpose? We can’t walk through every open door. Not every opportunity is meant to be pursued.
*Hit the break for a second and check in with yourself… “is this really true for me?”
Being true to yourself and walking your path will never require you to betray yourself. It means being genuine and real. Authenticity isn’t a personality trait… it’s a collection of choices that we make every day. A choice to be honest, a choice to let yourself be seen, a choice to stand out instead of fit in. It’s a daily practice of letting go of who we think we are supposed to be and embracing who we really are.
When you are on the path to your purpose, you are in touch with yourself on every level.
But what if that’s not how you’re feeling? This may mean you are disconnected from your purpose.
This is where those 7 signs come into play.
It’s Time To Wake Up To Your Purpose
I left my corporate job because of those warning signs. Waking up every morning, I felt energetically drained. Each day, I would walk into work, put on a fake smile, and tell myself I was just doing this because climbing the corporate ladder was what I thought I was supposed to want. It was inauthentic and disingenuous. I would lie to myself and my friends about how happy I was to maintain an image that I had it all figured out. Guess what? I didn’t. I was lost and I felt like a fraud. Finally, I realized that I wasn’t happy or even close to living my purpose because the dream I was pursuing wasn’t mine.
I encourage you to take a moment today and reflect. Take a look deep into yourself and ask the question, “Am I living my true purpose?”. Look at those 7 signs. Do you feel any of those in your day-to-day life? If the answer is yes, it’s time to start connecting to your purpose again.
Being true to yourself and walking your path will never require you to betray yourself. You’ll know you’re on your path when your integrity and your values are intact. When you stop compromising, you’ll know you’re reconnected with your purpose.
