How To Stop Putting Off Your Goals

At the beginning of every year, we set our New Year’s resolutions. Maybe we want to get fit, read 20 books, travel to a new country- the possibilities are endless.

But now that it’s September, and the end of the year is approaching, I want to know…

Have you achieved your goals? Are you on track to reach them by the end of the year?

I get it, sometimes our goals can feel really hard to reach. Especially the bigger they are!  We WILL face resistance. It may look like, “I’ll do it tomorrow.”, “I don’t have time.”, and “I’m too tired.”

The key to actually achieving your goals? You have to expect resistance and learn to overcome it.

3 Reasons Why You Aren’t Accomplishing Your Goals:

1. You didn’t schedule them.

Owning your calendar is one of the most powerful things you can do. When you start to fill up your calendar for the year, what are you actually making time for?

If you are filling it up with work calls and commitments to others, where is the time for you? If your goal for the year wasn’t added to your calendar, chances are you never had time for it. Scheduling in time for things like play, rest, and what you want to achieve is crucial to a well-balanced life- and also to meeting your goals.

2. They weren’t important enough.

They have fallen off of your priority list and other things took precedence.

This is a great time to look in the mirror and ask yourself, “How bad do I really want this?”. This is a great time to figure out if your goal was an aspiration or an obligation. We will always find a way to achieve our “must”s, but we don’t function the same way about our “should”s. If you are trying to figure out what goals you really want, make a list and rank them by importance and want. The ones that are most important that you want the most will be the goals worth setting.

3. Other people are controlling your time.

You’re saying yes to way too many things. When you know what you want it’s easier to say no. If you aren’t clear on what you want, you’ll say yes to everything.

The problem with saying yes is that it closes a door to 100 other things you could be doing. Learn to prioritize the people and things that you want. Say yes to the situations that help you achieve your goals and say no to the others. What are the most important things? Make those the most important things. Say no to everything that would stand in your way.

Your growth is the only limit of your happiness.

When you are unhappy with certain parts of your life, that is a sign of where you need to grow! Your future is built on the foundation of your daily decisions. And these decisions are your habits.

As you go to set your next goal, remember to choose one you’ll prioritize. Schedule time for it, nurture it, and commit to making it happen.
