4 Steps To Reprogram Your Mind

Most of us grow up thinking “I’m my body” or “I am my thoughts”. During a recent episode of the Coachable Podcast I sat down with Drew Canole, founder of super food company, Organifi, to discuss how we are so much more. Your brain and body are so much more powerful than we ever imagined.

Feel the Pressure

Growing up we face so many different pressures. Parents, teachers and societal norms tell us who we need to be, what we should be doing with our lives. Many times this comes in the form of unspoken expectations, while others are insisted upon during upbringing. It’s often well-meaning. “You can be anything you want to be”. “You will accomplish so much more than I did”.  Others sound more like “I can’t wait for you to go to Princeton, just like me and your mom”. These ideas cause an underlying sense of control and fear-based thinking.

Whether it’s our parents, peers or even tv shows, the idea that we should know what we want to do with our lives is reinforced time and time again. It creates more confusion for those who have not figured it out yet. You are bombarded with messages about who you should be in order to be loved. Then, this will start to form who you are. Many of us are so busy trying to live up to other people’s expectations that we don’t take time to consider what we want for ourselves. When we are not aware, unconsciously these ideas slip into our minds. We assume that these thoughts are our thoughts. We believe we do want to go to Princeton, or become a lawyer like our father. However, these are not ours at all. Someone else programmed them.

When we follow the dream that someone else planned for us, this leads to a variety of problems. Eventually we become aware that this is not what we want. That acknowledgment if not addressed and acted on can lead to: resentment, lethargy, and emptiness. You spend time working towards the “perfect” life that wasn’t even your idea. Chasing money, burning yourself out to impress people whose opinions don’t even matter. We do this because we assume when we accomplish the goal, get the girl, or make the money we’ll be happy. It’s a never ending hamster wheel that leaves you exhausted, depleted and nowhere closer to what you truly want…fulfillment.

So how do we get off the hamster wheel of life?

STEP 1: Recognize where IN your life are proving or pursuing things that are not what you really want. The  “this is NOT me” moment is a wake up call. This is the first step off of the wheel and out of the cage.

STEP 2: Identify the programmed dreams. Begin by creating a list of things that you believe to be true. These can be things about work, relationships or who you need to be. Example: “I believe that my parents would be more proud of me if I made more money.”

Next, look over your list and highlight the statements. What was programmed into you ? What did you pick up from someone else?

Example: “I believe I should make $100,000 a year and 60 hours a week. That’s how I’m successful.”

Truly, you do not believe this; But you took this on because various authority figures told you too. That big-time job was what you should do with your life if you want to be successful.

STEP 3: Next to each highlighted statement, write a new statement that aligns with your true beliefs.

Example: “I believe I have the ability to do whatever I set my mind to because I am smart.”

Think about what you truly want. Your body, your light, your mind, is so much bigger than just what someone told you

STEP 4: Keep and reread your list of new beliefs and continue to add to it. Doing so will help you ingrain these beliefs into yourself as you move through each season of life.

Find Yourself, Free Your Mind

Finding yourself after years of living in someone else’s light can be challenging. Starting with things like forgiveness, curiosity, and compassion can help you to transition. Go from being told who you are, to becoming who you’re meant to be.
