Why Balancing Your Hormones and Building Awareness is Your Key to Weight Loss

It’s okay to want a different relationship with your body! There can be a sense of guilt or shame around wanting to lose weight. Wanting to lose weight doesn’t mean you don’t love yourself! You can love yourself in every season your body goes through. It’s not one or the other. You can want to evolve and also love yourself.

If you want to lose weight and it’s a deeply rooted desire, it is self-love to give yourself that desire!

We can’t heal what we hate. Acceptance is the only way through.

You have to take responsibility for where you are now. You have to be accepting of where you are. The number on the scale, the size on your jeans- it’s not wrong!

It is what it is and we have to accept it. We must step into a neutral place to make changes and not self-sabotage.

Balance your hormone

When you’re ready to start on the path to making a change through self love, balancing your hunger hormones is a great place to start! 3 hormones that you need to be on the lookout for are insulin, leptin, and ghrelin.

Insulin

When your insulin isn’t balanced, you’re having huge spikes from sugar, and then crashing afterward. It’s like having a sugary smoothie for breakfast and then feeling like you’re starving by 10 am! Making sure to have a balance of foods during each meal can help reduce spikes in your insulin.

Leptin

Leptin is the hormone that tells you that you’re full! It regulates the long term balance between your body’s food intake and it’s energy use. When your other hormones aren’t balanced, it makes it really hard for your leptin to tell you that you’re full, causing you to overeat.

Ghrelin

Ghrelin tells you when you’re hungry. When your hormones aren’t balanced, this will alert you that you’re hungry- even after a big meal. Your hormones are telling you that it’s urgent you eat now, even when it isn’t.

When you balance your hormones, you are giving yourself the gift of…

-no cravings

-no hormonal hunger

-no storing excess fat

-using the excess fat for fuel

Have Awareness

Along with balancing your hunger hormones, it’s important to also have awareness. Things like saying no, sticking to your commitments, and being kind to yourself all come into play on a weight loss journey.

1. It’s okay to say no.

Saying no can feel wrong. A lot of us grew up being told that saying no is rude. If we’re being offered dessert, we shouldn’t say no. If we’re being offered another serving, we can’t say no. Starting the switch to “No thanks” will help you to let go of pleasing others and start pleasing yourself. If you’re looking to lose weight and someone continues to offer you processed sugars, a simple “No thank you” won’t end that relationship and will build an even stronger one with yourself.

2. Stick to it.

This is so much of the yo-yo experience regarding healthy eating. Commitment is a really harsh word! But what are they really? Commitment is honoring your word no matter what. This means you can make mistakes, but you have to keep trying and keep going. You can have dessert and still continue on your weight loss journey. You can not meet your water intake goal for the day, and still continue on your wellness path.

3. Have Kind-sight

Look back with love. When we make a mistake, we aren’t going to look back at those moments with shame or guilt- that is not loving ourselves! When you reflect on your mistakes, look back with kindness. Look for better strategies to use when you’re in those situations. Teach yourself how to correct your mistakes and as you continue, they will happen less and less.
