5 Steps to Overcome the Fear of Being Seen
Do you ever find yourself holding back from pursuing your dreams because of the fear of being seen? Maybe you shy away from sharing your thoughts and opinions online, or you hide your creativity because you’re afraid of what others might think. The fear of being seen is a common fear that can hold us back from living authentically, but it doesn’t have to be that way! I recently recording a podcast episode with the incredible Jen Gottlieb where she shares all about her experience of overcoming her fear of being seen.
In summary of that episode – here are a few steps you can take to overcome the fear of being seen and start living your life to the fullest!
#1 Acknowledge the Source
The first step in overcoming the fear of being seen is to acknowledge the source of your fear. Take some time to reflect on your past experiences, beliefs, and even the self-talk that contributes to this fear. By understanding the source of your fear, you are able to reframe these negative thoughts and beliefs and develop a more positive self-image.
#2 Practice Vulnerability & Authenticity
Being vulnerable and authentic can be scary, but it can also be incredibly liberating. We all have unique magic within us that is meant to be shared with the world. In order to share this magic you can start by being honest with yourself about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, and then take small steps to share your true self with others. This could mean speaking up in a conversation, sharing a personal story with a friend, or expressing your creativity in a new way. It can be scary – but as will anything in life – the more you practice, the easier it will be!
#3 Build a Support System
This is an important step and in my opinion – one of the most important! You have to surround yourself with people who accept and validate you for who you are. Having a support system can provide encouragement and motivation, and can help you to feel less alone in your journey. Sometimes this support system won’t be who you originally thought it would be, and that’s ok. It may include friends, family, or you can build a community online that shares in your interests or values.
#4 Take Risks
Overcoming the fear of being seen often requires taking risks and stepping outside of your comfort zone. Think of the saying – “nothing changes if nothing changes”.
It’s no secret that being vulnerable and open to being seen is scary. So taking any actions to overcome this will feel scary and push you outside of your comfort zone.
You can start by taking small, calculated risks that align with your values and goals.
#5 Embrace Imperfection
Remember that nobody is perfect, and that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process. Instead of striving for perfection, focus on your progress and growth. Celebrate your successes! Learn from your mistakes, and keep moving forward towards your goals.
In conclusion, overcoming the fear of being seen is a process that takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. By acknowledging the source of the fear, practicing vulnerability and authenticity, building a support system, taking risks, and embracing imperfection, you can start living your life to the fullest and pursuing your dreams with confidence. So take that first step today and see where it takes you!
